FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHER: Most photoshoots I have seen from Venice have a light and airy feel to them. That was never how I imagined Venice. As I was planning my trip there a few weeks ago I stumbled across a painting by John Singer Sargent called “Strada a Venezia” from 1882. It perfectly portrayed the dark and magical atmosphere I associate with this unique ancient city of narrow alleys, masks, art, blank ink pasta, mysterious octopusses, dark artichokes, and violent 5th century history.

The day before the shoot was dark and rainy and I hoped that would continue on the shoot day as the city, in my opinion, shows itself from its most interesting side in that kind of weather. Instead we woke to a warm sunny day, so I did my best to bring out the moodiness of my vision despite this. When I saw my model, Ilgaz, for the first time, I just knew she was right for this shoot, her innocence, dark eyes and wild curly hair. I decided to cancel the hair and make up artist and just keep her au natural, to give the shoot a more authentic feeling. I chose two simple designs from Copenhagen designer Maria Fekih and paired them with two crowns from Finnish headpiece designer Aino.
